Now begins day two of our adventure in Las Vegas and this is where a lot of the fun begins. Today was our first full day in town and we had no agenda!
The day began with an early start due to the fact that we wanted to catch a sunrise. We woke up earlier than I have ever gotten up in Las Vegas and decided to make our way out on to the strip. This was our first mistake. In case you hadn't noticed there are tall buildings everywhere in Las Vegas and it is not exactly easy to get away from them. We struggled to find a view of the sunrise before it was already up in the sky, thus defeating the point of us getting out of bed early.
My second mistake was not going to starbucks first thing. There happens to be two Starbucks locations in the Planet Hollywood Hotel and I pushed passed both of them for the chance to see the sunrise. This made it even harder to find another one once we were on the road. Sadly, the only other one that I found was across the street in a shopping mall at the Aria that still wasn't open. I thought this was odd but since the shopping wasn't open I guess it made sense not to open the Starbucks.
So after seeing very little sunrise, we headed back to our hotel checking out the early morning characters that were still out on the street. Most of these people still had not gone to bed, but I hope some of them were like us and just happened to be up early that morning.
Now it was time to make use of the pool. Unfortunely this was a task easier said than done. While we were at Planet Hollywood, half of the pool was under renovation. No big deal as we weren't there during high season but the problem came to be when we got out there. Since we were up so early we wanted to go to the pool as early as we could. It opened at 10am but we came to find out that the sun didnt fully cover the pool area until closer to 11 am or later. This left us sitting in the cold Las Vegas shade for a little while. We enjoyed some drinks at the pool with typical Las Vegas prices and even thought about getting a cabanna for a little while. We opted instead to find another adventure.
Now we were off to the spa. I didn't realize, although someone probably told me, but the spa facilities are part of my daily resort fee. Well I wasn't planning on using them but when my wife went in to get her nails repainted and this was brought up to me I said sure why! I am by no means a spa guy, nor do I know much about spa etiquette but I was greeted by a very attentive staff that was happy to show me around and let me know what was going on. I enjoyed my use of the spa, sauna, and steam room all of which I had to myself. There were a few people hanging out in the lounge but it wasn't very crowded.
What other kinds of excitement could we find on this day. My wife wanted to check out the Coca-Cola store and M and M Store so that was next on the agenda. These are two places that I have seen on countless trips to Las Vegas but never have I gone to them. We made our way down the strip checking out the sites and sounds along the way as this was the opposite direction we had gone yesterday. Finally, we arrived at the M and M store. This was a huge store that included every type of M and M I could imagine and we needed to try all of them. We ended up leaving with a two pound bag that I think we are still working on finishing. Next, it was on to the Coke store. This place was packed with people and every piece of memorabilia you could imagine. The best thing we discovred was an around the world tasting that they would put some ice cream in and make a float. It was a great deal and fun afternoon activity that didn't involve alcohol. We got three trays of different flavors from around the world, some good and some bad, but all unique. There was plenty for everyone to taste and enjoy.
Finally it was time for me to gamble again. This time I would be enjoying the Planet Hollywods facilities. This is a place that I have gambled in before and knew my way around. I spent all of my time on this trip playing slots. I made my way all over the Casinyes floor covering every price denomination game. Everything worked great. I had access to nearly everything I wanted to play without much of a wait. From the ever popular movie themed slots to the old classics they are all here. Since I did not play any table games it is not fair for me to pass judgement on this trip, but based on previous trips I know the staff at the Planet Hollywood is very well trained and capable! There will be a full write up on specific gambling reviews in a later blog.
